International Car Rental For Beginners
Renting a car is a great way to get around different places all over the world. It gives you freedom and flexibility you wouldn’t have if you depend on mass transport. Sometimes, renting a car is the only way to get around. Rental policies may vary in different countries but they all follow some standard guidelines. If you plan to rent a car on you next trip overseas, here are some tips to help save you money and make the process easier.
Car Rental Tips
- First, find a reputable car rental agency. Ask the airport or hotels. They usually have a list of accredited car rental agencies that are used to demands from tourists and may have car models not normally found in that country.
- Think about the type of car you’ll need. Are you travelling with children, with animals, or sensitive equipment or gear? Make a list of cars you think would suit your needs. This is so you’ll have several options in case the car you want isn’t available in that country.
- Rent the smallest car that would suit your needs. Smaller cars are often cheaper to rent, consumes less gas and are easier to manoeuvre in any road condition.
- Check the driving requirements and the standard car specifications in that country. Do you need an international driver’s license? Can you drive a right-hand vehicle? Can you drive a stick shift?
- Check if the car rental agency has towing support and affiliates all over the country. This is so you can easily call the agency in case you get into an accident or your car breaks down.
- If possible, book in advance. Preferably before even landing on the airport. Advanced bookings are often cheaper and it will save you the hassle of looking for a car rental agency. Some agencies even offer free pick-ups from the airport to your hotel or their office.
- Understand every word of your car rental agreement. If the rental agreement is in a different language, ask for an English version or have it translated. It’s important that you understand all the terms and conditions and clarify any irregularities before signing your name on the contract. Be clear on who are the ones allowed to drive the care, the penalties on late returns or no shows, and any other restrictions that may be imposed.
- Find out exactly how much it would cost to rent a car. Are there any taxes or surcharges that you need to pay? Do you need to pay for extra insurance or drop-off charges? How much does gasoline costs in that country? Anticipate any extra charges that may be incurred so you add it in the budget for your trip.
- And finally, once you return the car make sure you don’t leave behind any personal belongings. Small items like sunglasses, cell phones or wallets can easily be left behind in a rental car. You should also make sure to return the car in the same condition that you got it to avoid any additional charges.
Renting a car in a foreign country doesn’t have to be intimidating or confusing. Just remember our tips and you’ll be cruising around in no time.
